Primordial Buddhas


When using the word "Buddha" we generally mean Śākyamuni Buddha. However in the past there have been many Buddhas. It is said that the present aeon, termed the "bhadrakalpa", will have 1000 Buddhas, earlier aeons had few, if any Buddhas at all.

Śākyamuni Buddha is the 4th Buddha of this aeon. Before this aeon it is said that there were 21 others. The table below gives the names of the various Primordial Buddhas as given in the Buddhavaṃsa of the Pāli Khuddakanikāya.
