Origins of the Rinzai Yogi Lineage in Japan

The Linchi (Rinzai) school of chinese Ch'an (Zen) and more particularly The Yogi Branch of the Rinzai School developed into the predominant Zen lineage in Japan. Although there were many contacts with the chinese Linchi School, the lineage originating with Shomyo (the Ō-tō-kan-School) which centuries later was "reformed/rejuvenated" by Master Hakuin (1686-1769) represents the most vital Zen School in Japan today.

The chinese Rinzai Yogi Master Lan-chi Tao-lung (1203-1268) came to Japan in 1246. One of his pupils was Shomyo who went to China and later established a Rinzai Yogi lineage in Japan, which later flourished.
